Today is the world famous Wild Orchid Resort’s Beauty Pageant. What is this you ask? Well, a bunch of the bars get together (I’m not sure which exactly) and they put on a show at the Wild Orchid Resort, one of the nicest hotels and resorts in Angeles City. It’s located on Santos Street, formerly known as Blow Row to you veterans.

What do the girls do? Well, they look sexy of course. Walking around in their bikinis, playing in the pool & splashing in the water, trying to sell raffle tickets, and doing everything else fun and naughty.

This day was super hot beyond belief in the Philippines. It was a dam scorcher. Ouch. I still remember it. Well, enough talk, time to see the sexy Filipinas strut their stuff for you SYKos.

So you’re in the Philippines already? Awesome, sweet, eat some balut. Ok, you did that. Wash it down with some Red Horse? Yup, conquered that. Now where’s the girl? It’s…8pm, and you’re having trouble getting a girl to go out (or in) with you. Why is this?

First off, this obviously does not concern those of you interested in the bar girls, because that is their job – to go with you at those naughty hours of the night. But what I’d like to focus on is the non bar girl. Perhaps that cute Filipina working at SM, Robinsons, or just a random food stall on the road. Ahh the wonders of the Philippines.

So why might it be difficult to get one of these girls to go with you? Oh, read on my students…

Throughout my travels of the Philippines, I’ve been lucky enough to hit all 3 major islands (Luzon, Visaya, and Mindanao). In each place, finding the right Filipino girl is a little trickier than the next. While in Dumaguete, it seemed as if I only had a select two or three girls that could go out past 5pm. In Angeles City and in Cebu, the opportunities seemed to be endless. But why?

Well, it all comes down to one thing. Where does the girl live? I don’t mean what city, but I mean exactly physically. If it’s with her parents or ANY relative, you can basically forget about all dating with her at night (daytime, yes). You MIGHT get lucky to get them away from the family after 5pm, but in most instances, there’s no chance at all.

Tons of foreigners come to the Philippines for the girls, yes, among many other things. So it’s interesting to note that although many come for the girls, the country is still EXTREMELY conservative in some aspects. If the girl is living with her family, you will really have to do some work to date the girl. I have never been successful in really dating a girl that lives with her family. When I look back on the girls I’ve met and dated, only the ones that live away from their family are the ones that I have success with. There are a few girls that are exceptions to this rule, but I’m focusing on the majority statistics here.

So in Dumaguete for example, this is a small small town. Except for one of the Universities there, most people are not traveling TO Dumaguete for work. No, they are leaving Dumaguete to go find work. They are going to Manila, Cebu, and other bigger cities. Another example is the bar girls in Angeles. They don’t actually come FROM Angeles (well, a select few do), but they come from faraway provinces that don’t have enough jobs – such as Samar, Leyte, and different provinces in the Visaya/Mindanao region.

If you’re a guy like me, and you like a girl to spend the night (who doesn’t right?), you need to find a girl NOT living with her family. Sure, if she’s living with her family, you can easily take her to lunch, but you really won’t be able to spend that hardcore quality time together, such as overnights or 2-3 day trips unless you have some serious convincing skills on your hands. Serious convincing skills would mean basically convincing her parents that you are serious about marrying her. And that’s just an awful, horrible lie that nobody wants to do.

You need to look for girls that are possibly IN Angeles, Cebu, Manila, Davao, etc, but are FROM other places. This is why I love Angeles and Cebu. So many girls are from different provinces but going to school or working in these places. The same would go for Manila. They find a little room in a small house – this is called a bedspacer. Around the Philippines you will see these signs, such as “Room for rent” or “Lady spacer avail”…those types of things. Be on the lookout for them on your next trip. Typically the cost will be 1,500 pesos per month or somewhere near there.

They will be alone, no family, usually not many friends since they are gone from their hometown, and best of all, EXTREMELY bored and looking for something to do. This is where I’ve had most of my success. Even when I start chatting with Philippine girls online, one of the most important questions I ask is “Who do you live with?” If her answer is with family, I won’t ALWAYS immediately move on to the next girl, but there’s a good chance I will within 5 minutes. I’ve had enough experience with these curfews (yes, even for 25 year old girls) that I don’t care to deal with them anymore.

So, if you’re like me, and you hate wasting time getting nowhere with a Filipina lady, take my advice, and focus on the girls that do not live with their family. Because chances are you won’t be able to get those girls out of the house past 5pm. Girls that go to the very top of my list are girls that are working in a city but originally from a different city, and just renting a room/bedspacer. Angeles City is full of them. Cebu is full of them. Davao was full of them. Dumaguete was really hard to find. In Dumaguete, I had trouble getting girls to hang out. It was quite difficult because they ALL seemed to be still living at home.

So look for those girls living in bedspacers. They aren’t worried about their family watching their every move. They now have the freedom to stay out as late as they want, or even sleep over. And they want to as well. So add this piece of knowledge to your arsenal when looking for a beautiful Filipino girl to date.

Getting my laundry ready to be cleaned since I will be leaving for Dumaguete soon. I head to the laundry shop, take care of business, and then see a fake Zagu company called Zacobi. If you know what a milk tea is, they sell those things. Quite tasty if done right. Off to 7-11 for a pre-gym snack. What do I buy? Kit Kat balls or something similar.

I hit the gym and then off to Puregold for food. Some so yummy kaya boneless bangus is on the menu. I love the way they marinate it, already ready to cook. Grapes are too damn expensive in the Philippines. I pick up a handful of Dole big dick bananas, Century Light Tuna, and some chicken nuggets that don’t have any nutrition facts on the box. Scary. Oh yea, I pick up a Hormel Compleats, my shitty weakness. Off to the carinderia for some rice and then back home to feast.

Did you get scammed in the Philippines? A lover? A one-nighter? An ex? A trike driver? A jeepney ride? Tell your story. I will share mine. Share yours to help our fellow SYKos prepare for their first journey to the Philippines. The Philippines is a wonderful place, but it is very poor. And where there is poverty, people will do just about anything to get a little money.

I live in America. Never once in my life (maybe this is rare) have I been asked for money to borrow. In 2009 I went off to Tarlac, Philippines. I met a girl from Angeles City and we dated on and off for about a month. About a week into the dating, she was with me in the hotel and telling me that her baby was really sick in the hospital with dengue fever and she couldn’t pay the medical bill. She was asking for 3,000 pesos.

Since I had never been asked once for money in America, I assumed the same rules applied in the Philippines. I listened to what she said, I knew she was poor, and I thought, “Holy shit, she can’t pay this bill for this serious disease.” And it’s only $70 or so. She even said she would pay me back. I gave her the 3,000 fairly easily. A week went by and once again her baby was in the hospital with dengue and needed 1,500 to pay the bill. This time I was skeptical. Two times in a row with dengue? Something wasn’t adding up.

This time I said I would pay it but I wanted to see a receipt. I even went as far to say that I wanted to talk to the doctor, but she had some excuse as to why I couldn’t. Sure enough, she produced a “receipt” that was on hospital printed paper, and she was waiting for me all day, so I gave her the 1,500.

Of course it didn’t stop and she asked for more money for something else the next week, but at this point I didn’t believe it anymore. She never got any more money, but her fake hospital stories kept up for the next month or so.

Another girl I met in the mall asked for 500 pesos for her rent and promised to pay me back when she got her paycheck. This was the 2nd girl asking money from me. I was reluctant, but she promised to pay it back by the end of the week. I thought maybe I just got unlucky with the first girl. So I gave the money and she actually paid it back when she said she would, but asked a couple weeks later for more than 1,000 pesos. She was really just an acquaintance. No dating, just a few texts here and there. I did not give her the money this time. I just apologized and said I couldn’t.

I quickly realized that being a foreigner in the Philippines meant that I will be getting asked for money A LOT. This was my first real trip to the Philippines. It was a 3 month stay. During this trip, I made friends with a bunch of employees from the mall in Tarlac. There was nothing to do all day so I’d basically go to the mall and just bullshit with them in the store and look at the cute sales ladies. I went on a few outings with the whole group as well. One day I bought 3 or 4 pairs of underwear worth about 300 a piece, and gave them to one of my friends at the mall to hold on to while I was still shopping around. Sure enough, when I got back a few hours later, he didn’t know where they went.

I was continuously asked here and there to borrow money. I never gave it again. My excuse was always the same. Something along the lines of “Sorry, I get asked every week for money and I just can’t give everyone money.” They usually didn’t push when I said that.

Other scams that come off the top of my head – well, this one isn’t a scam, but just an example of how I lost money. While in Cebu I went barhopping with a hotel employee. We went out, got drunk. He couldn’t handle his liquor too well and said he needed to get home. He didn’t have money for a taxi and the only bills I had on me were 500. The taxi ride would cost 80. He said he’d give me the change in the morning. Sure enough in the morning, here comes the story. “Oh my god I was in the back of the taxi and I vomitted and the money was all over the back of the taxi car and I lost it all in the car.”

How did I respond to this? I simply said, “Oh that sucks, are you feeling better?” There’s just no point to get into an argument. I clearly know what happened, but what’s the point? I’m not going to get the money back and I’m just going to say he’s a liar to his face, for what? In those situations I just make a mental note never to go out with that particular person again. It must be embarrassing enough for people to have to lie like that to get a few dollars…so I won’t put him through any more embarrassment.

I had one iPhone stolen during a jeepney ride in Angeles City. Another Palm Treo stolen while I stupidly put the phone on the table in a videoke bar while I was singing. Thankfully, no money ever stolen while asleep or anything like that. But I can’t even count how many times I’ve been asked for money. That is just beyond 100 times for sure.

Philippines is a poor place, and many people want to escape and work in another country for a “better” life. It always intrigues me to think how we foreigners will do just about anything to get TO the Philippines, and how some Filipinos will do just about anything to leave the Philippines. They want to be where we are, and we want to be where they are.

So all in all, be careful, don’t put your shit down on a table, and be prepared to be asked for money and hear tons of reasons why (mostly doctor, hospital, medicine/medical costs).

I just noticed at our little widget (custom created by our very own Salamiha, or to me, Salarhea) to the left that the peso to USD rate finally hit 43. Since we put it up, I’ve only seen it at 42 and change. Hopefully, somehow, this trend continues til it hits 50 and beyond. Yea right, what the fuck am I smoking?

The highest it’s ever been while I was in the Philippines was in 2007 at 46 and change. You can view the graphs below and remember the good old days. Basically, now with the fees and such, it’s safe to say that you get somewhere around 41-42 pesos per dollar.

Showing you how to make a tuna fish sandwich in the Philippines. I run into a random Filipino Videoke/Karaoke party and decline to sing. Then I head out to Fields Avenue for a little bit of bar hopping. I went to Blue Nile.

The next day I’m off to LBC to pickup my new blogging camera for Dumaguete.
